ABOUT REBECCA
I am a picture book author/illustrator seeking representation, with the goal of publishing the first of what I hope will be many books for children. I have several completed manuscripts, and even more in progress, and I actively participate in the kidlit community, my regional chapter of the SCBWI (East PA), and in my poetry and PB critique groups.
My writing is sometimes silly, sometimes reverent, but always a reflection of my lifelong love of nature, classic literature, and poetry. My love of the natural world is deep-rooted. I was raised in south Georgia, on the edge of the Altamaha River swamp, surrounded by soaring pines, flowering azaleas, and ancient balding cypress. The raw beauty of my childhood has followed me throughout my life and is often the foundation of my writing and my art. Much of my writing is lyrical and poetic, whether rhyme or prose, though I do write humor, as well. As a child, I was obsessed (a truly appropriate word) with cartoonists Jim Davis, Charles Schulz, and Lynn Johnston, and I spent hours drawing their characters and creating my own comics. I love absurdity and just plain silliness as much as I love nature, and this, too, shows up in my picture book manuscripts.
In addition to my childhood influences, I often find inspiration in things my students say. I currently teach middle and high school art, and I’ve taught elementary art, as well. I’ve been very fortunate to spend a lot of time with children, guiding and observing them as they create.
